Hand-written by First Class Private Phil O'Raily

June 7, 2032 My name is Phil O'Raily, First Class Private in the U.S.A. Air Force. I'm 22 years old. My parents live in Bangor, Maine. My colleagues and I were ordered to secure the object "Zeus-55" in Nevada. Today is June 7, 2032 and the time is near midnight. It might already be the 8th of June. I don't know the exact time as my watches have stopped.
I'm now in the west tunnel of Zeus. But if you are reading this note, it means you found my body here. You need to go further into the tunnel because there could be some people alive! All electronics are out of order and it's not possible to open the vents from the inside. I'm going to try to push them from the outside and free the people. I’m standing in front of a tunnel with a rusty ladder inside that goes down 1,300 feet. I can either go the speed of a turtle or the speed of a rock falling. As we used to say in the Air Force, “you don’t die from falling; you die from hitting the ground.”
The people above died from a different cause. Those deep under the ground had a chance to survive and I'm one of them. My curiosity had saved me. Three days ago, internal security was rearranged by people I had never seen. As far as I understood, they were from the CIA. May they rest in peace. We soldiers were given a week's vacation. My buddy Jack Logan said it could be related to some test were weren’t supposed to know about. It was gonna be reviewed by some bigwigs we weren't allowed to meet.
The scientists had been on edge the whole week. One of them, Norris, fumed and trudged around like my Uncle Bruce's horse. He even stopped arguing with Chariskiy about who was the first to invent this nonsense they are all working on, whether it was Serbian Tesla or Russian Filippov. Chariskiy looks like a Russian, but we all trust him. Chariskiy didn't want us to go home when we were first released. "You should probably investigate it," he said. "Investigate what?" I asked. "How the future will be made," he replied. The eggheads always pull the wool over our eyes. I had been listening in on a lot of other conversations and thought that the secret testing might be related to transferring something over a long distance, either objects or energy. Chariskiy had convinced me to try to look at it. I bet Logan 100 bucks that I'd see how the future would be made. It didn't take much time to prepare. I threw some combat rations in my backpack with some water and a flask of Jack Daniels. I climbed into the container carrier that ran between the external perimeter and the testing tunnels. Last night it was transferring goods to the west tunnel. Engineers from Norris's team were going the same way.
The transport platform had always run to the west tunnel, but for some reason it stopped at the Northern tunnel. As I wondered what was happening, the container was unloaded and all of the workers got on the platform. I decided to wait for the next transport, but it never came.
My mom always told me that my foolishness would get me in trouble. She was mistaken. Now I realize that my foolishness saved my life. The experiment was none of my business but in my haste to see it I ended up safe in the northern tunnel. When the light switched off and the ventilation stopped, I knew there was something wrong. I had heard about blackouts in New York, when people got locked in a subway and injured because of panic. The northern tunnel was quiet. When I'm alone, I never panic. I am too foolish. As other soldiers used to say, "If you don't panic, you must not know the whole situation." Before I left the northern tunnel, I took a few sips from my flask for courage. It’s not for nothing that I dragged it with me. If you are reading this, you know how it looks up there. Above ground I saw their bodies; Norris and Chariskiy. They lay side by side in front of a main console with a dozen bodies surrounding them. There was no one to rescue and communication with the outer world was totally gone. There remains a chance that I will find people alive here in the western tunnel.
So, I'm going inside…

Story Arthur Frobenius

The Diary Entries of Doctor Arthur Frobenius
Approximate date: June, 2034

It is a strange feeling, being a patient. Before all of this, I had never been ill. Before… After the injection Teresa gave me, I cannot think of the present, only the past. I should have died two years ago, but fate has sentenced me to spend my time thinking about the nightmare that has happened while watching my friends and loved ones die. I am forced to spend the rest of my days in a fruitless attempt to rescue crazy people and, finally, die on a dirty mattress in a hastily-organized hospital.
Twenty one years ago, two classmates and I had conjured up a fantastic idea. We were going to create a neural nanobot system that could improve the efficiency of the human brain through an organic "distributed computing" method. This distributed computing would be arranged inside the brain instead of a computer. Put simply, the person implanted with this nano-equipment could think of several things at once both awake and in their dreams.
After a decade of hard work and excellent public relations on behalf of our business partners, we released our new nanobot drugs, implants, and enzymes. They sold over the counter like aspirin. Billions of people have since become dependent on these new stimulants. We were hailed by most as great benefactors to the world. Others became out enemies, but in one way or another all of humanity benefited from our creation.

Had we given true thought to the consequences? Of course, we thought. We loved to talk about it over a few drinks upon the successful conclusion of one of our tests. During those chats, we realized that humanity was becoming more technologically vulnerable. It began before our intervention, with the building of the first aqueducts. Even earlier, when man first learned how to use fire, one of the members of the primitive tribe had to stay up and maintain the bonfire all night. Should the fire die out, so too would the tribe. If the aqueducts of later man were destroyed, the city would have died of thirst. In our time, destruction of the computer network would leave the country and even continent paralyzed. If an electromagnetic emission went awry it could kill all of mankind. I now realize we hadn't thought of the consequences. The people responsible for the disaster retained their body and mind - myself, Ernie, and a few of our colleagues. We were working on the new smart enzymes. To guard against unforeseen problems, we carried out the tests in a secured room…or so we thought. Later, someone could accuse us of anticipating the calamity but there is no one to accuse us now.

I met my first “mankurt” on the first floor of our research complex. He had been an unskilled technician, a man without a name and without a homeland. Broken nanobots had damaged his cerebral cortex when he had emerged from the building at the time of the incident. The effect was like a poisonous dementia. His mental development had plunged to the level of a three year old child and he had lost all memory. His ability to speak had somewhat survived, but I was unable to understand a word he said. He was drooling saliva and tried to grab me by my coat and drag me somewhere. It was then that I saw the dead bodies, and paid no more attention to him. Ten years earlier, my colleague Ernie had mentioned to me that one could use a certain frequency of radiation to boil a brain full of our nanobots. "Have you found this frequency?" I asked him. He replied, "I am trying, so that I can find a way to neutralize it."
On June 6th, 2032, I first saw what a boiled human brain looks like. A man named Lan from the administrative department fell from a window and his skull split open on the asphalt. Had someone found the dreaded radiation frequency?
Outside of the building, the robotic lawnmower sliced pointless circles in the lawn, its knives spinning and shearing the blades of grass. At one point it stumbled upon the edge of a paralyzed body, spraying a fountain of blood. I rushed to the man, believing he was still alive, but it was too late. The knives had sunk deep and severed his carotid artery. His mangled face was covered with blood. I never found out what his name was.
This all appeared to us as a nightmare with no explanation. We had seen no traces of destruction as in a natural disaster. We had heard no gunshots as in a terrorist attack. Perhaps it was a mass poisoning or biological attack? Ernie seemed to agree, and he told everyone to flee to the bio-protective overalls. At the time it seemed the smart thing to do. All electronics were out of order. Ernie unsuccessfully tried to contact the rescue service. Radio and television were silent. Barbara, her small child still at home with the babysitter, rushed out to the parking lot. When her car wouldn't start she fell to the ground, pounding it in hysterical agony. I ran to aid her as I told Ernie to hand out protective coveralls for everybody.
Of course, we did not then appreciate the magnitude of the disaster. We attributed the failure of our phones to local problems. We thought we could reach the highway and find some sort of transportation. We felt we could surely make a call at the farm three kilometers away.

Much later, I as able to recover the data from the security cameras. They covered the area in front of our building and the access road. In the footage, a car slowly rolled up and stopped when it ran into the stairs. The driver's face was twisted in pain. He shouted but the camera recorded only silence. After a few seconds, his head fell lifeless down to the steering wheel. Other recordings of the sky made on the other side of the Earth revealed a weak light trail similar to the Northern Lights. Here it had been a sunny, normal day and it was hard to imagine that anything strange had happened. It was like a bird flying which suddenly drops out of the sky. Did it feel something or did it change direction on purpose? We would never know.
Only the five of us were now out of the building. . Barbara and Fischer went on to search for transportation and communication. Myself, Ernie, and Genevieve went to help the survivors. On this particular weekend, only a tenth of the morning staff had arrived for work. We found two more people in the same mental condition as the drooling technician. They had fallen and suffered bad head injuries. Genevieve found morphine in the infirmary and gave one of them an injection. Ernie and I were not able to hold the second person, so he escaped to the forest nearby. Within three hours we had ruined our reputations. We found fifteen dead bodies, four people in a deep coma, and three people with severe brain damage. We stayed with the survivors, attempting to keep them alive until Barbara and Fischer returned.

Fischer later returned alone at sunset. We were prepared for the worst but not ready for his news. All along the road lay the wreckage of cars with dead people inside. They had made it to the farm, where they found three dead people and one who had lost his mind. He had tried to attack Barbara and Ernie was able to use a shovel to stop him. Nobody had a working phone.

In one of the cars, a baby lay dead. Seeing this pushed Barbara over the edge and sent her running towards the city. Fischer had decided to come back and tell us what he saw.
We didn't know what to do with all of the bodies. We couldn’t leave them in the building, but the refrigeration units were not working so we decided to carry them to the street.
At some point all human feeling left us. Even a butcher in a slaughterhouse would have felt more empathy than us as we dealt with our dead colleagues. Throughout the night we moved the bodies out of the building.
Fischer had found some gasoline and a great funeral fire broke out agains the backdrop of the pearl-colored dawn sky. We went back down to the underground laboratory - the place that has saved us once and still seemed the safest place for us – and dropped to the floor, exhausted and spent.
And here I am, two years later, laying half-dead in bed. I know that I will never get up again. I did everything that I could. I hope I am redeemed from my guilt. One question lingers in my mind. I have never learned the names of those who lit the fuse. What were the names of those partners in this crime who ignited the nanobots laid by our work? Were they punished? Or are they alive somewhere, rubbing their hands together and free of the punishment they deserve? Will anyone deliver the justice that they deserve?
I pray to the Lord not to save me, but to find a person who can deliver that justice.

How To Become Invincible

Avoidances

.. aka How To Become Invincible! ;) *

Best practice is to take the data presented below only as a rough estimate and find out what mob/maturity gives you the best skill for yourself, by comparing SAU and skillgains **

NB!    In January 2010 major changes were introduced to the AW skillsystem.

Some parts of the following text may be obsolete or simply not true.

Most important change: you get most SAU from the mobs that are exactly on your current (avoidance) level.
A cut/stab/impact:
1. elsugs
2. molesaurs
3. bear - young, mature, provider
4. talon six - seeker, parasite, killer (Turfary B, Saransk S)
5. bear - gatherer, savage, man-eater
-------- ~stage 25 stab/cut/impact ------------
cut/stab
5. walrusek mature (FA)
cut/stab/cold:
6. ursusaid maritimus - young, hunter, dominator (SCF)
7. walrusek alba - young, seeker, hunter, dominator (SCF)

B penetration:
1. raider - brawler, newbie, explorer
 - taken out of the game, supposedly will be replaced with a new mob.. someday
--- defenders/stingers, if u need to get ur electric avoid up for E-95 ---
2. robot E-95 - lvl1, lvl2, lvl3
---------- ~stage 30 penetration ---------------
frag/pene/cut
3. robot R-57

C fragmentation:
1. raider - brawler, newbie, explorer, scout, soldier, proffessional, assaulter, executor -
taken out of the game

D acid:
1. steppe spiders/waspers
--- section A inbetween here ---
2. alba wolf, werewolf (FA, Bonito)

E cold:
1. foulito alba - apprentice (FA)
2. foulito alba - parasite (FA, SCF)
3. exhumator alba - killer, seeker, slayer, dominator (SCF)
---------- stage 15 cold ---------------
4. ursusaid maritimus - young, hunter, dominator (SCF)
5. walrusek alba - young, seeker, hunter, dominator (SCF)

F electric:
1. elslugs
2. stingers
3. defenders
4. robot E-95

G burn:
1. FR-12

* all levels are an estimate, and dependent not only on specific avoidance skill but also affected by other avoidance-related general skills
** after VU 9.3 most mobs damage was adjusted
(raised), therefore both the usable mobs and avoidance levels may not be correct

Avoidance Theory parts 2

Avoidance in PvP

Avoidance level is not an absolute factor, the inflicted damage is a balance between your avoidances and avoidance-negating skills of the attacker.
The final damage that other avatars are able to inflict to you depends on:
  • the weapon they use (weap. max damage & avatar eff. level with this weapon)
  • your avoidances
  • attacker's avoidance-penetrating skills (probably skills like: Aim, Accurate Eye, etc)
  • your armor

PvP armor calculations

At the moment the highest damage weapon anyone can use at 100% effectiveness (90%-100%) is Kulak F2000.
Maximum damage of this weapon is 78 points.

Penetration damage
There is no ammunition that can do only pure penetration damage.
Therefore maximum possible penetration damage is  78 : 2 = 39 points
Consequently S45 penetration armor is useless in PvP, S40 pene armor always blocks all penetration damage.
The same holds true for every damage type, there is only 1 exception -

Electrical damage
Only single-dmg ammunition atm is E-ammo
Maximum electric damage in PvP is 78 points.
At the same time electric avoidance is one of the highest avoidances for most avatars.

Burn damage
Maximum possible burn damage in PvP is 39 points.
It is the lowest avoidance for every avatar, therefore burn damage is one of the most effective damage types in PvP.
Best PvP armor atm is dual-protection armor, electric/penetration if your burn, cold, fragmentation and acid avoidances are equal and burn/penetration, if burn is lower.

Avoidance Theory parts 1

Avoidances are in nature similar to attack skills.
Mobs/avatars of different levels are comparable to weapons - each of them has a certain SR.
Difference between mobs and avatars is - mobs can rise you avoidance skills, avatars don't.
It is not possible to see the SR of the mob, you have to assess it indirectly - keep an eye on your SAU- and skillgains.
example: if E-95 lvl 1 often does only 0.5 points of damage to you, it means you have achieved effectiveness level that is close to 100% on E-95 lvl 1
but if so, E-95 lvl 1 does not give you any skills, your SR on it is almost depleted
for skilling you have to use higher level E-95

Avoidances and armor

Suppose Ursusaid Maritimus initially inflicted 160 points of  cold/cut/impact damage to someone.

Now the dices are rolled to calculate how much damage the target is able to avoid - it can be any value from 0 (maximum avoidance breakthrough or no avoidances) up to the maximum avoidance (depends on the avoidance level of the avatar).
Suppose 20 points of each damage type were successfully avoided: 20+20+20=60 points in total.
33 cold + 33 cut + 33 impact still remains

Next step: calculating the effect of the armor.
Armor always absorbs constant amount of damage, there is no randomness included.
Suppose it was S35 cold protection armor: 100-33=67

The avatar receives 67 points of damage.

Skilling

Mod versions :

With VU 8.9.3 the advanced/modified versions of weapons and HK's were added
These advanced versions don't have significantly higher damage or healing ability (just a few points), but they have different (higher) SR value

Using adv/mod versions gives the biggest effect in "SR gaps", i.e.: between HK A4 and HK A5 where SR (Skilling Rate) of the used item drops very low, resulting normally in very slow skilling progress.

Skilling‎ > ‎ Theories

Basic Skilling Theory

  1. Always keep an eye on your SAU- and Skillgains.
  • Attack skills are dependent mainly on the weapon SR (and ammo type) you are using, but also a little on the right mob/maturity.
  • Healing skills are dependent on the HK and avoidance skills on the mob.
No SAU gains is a clear message: "Something is wrong!"
Average of 3 SAU is good, avg 3+ is super

Found a good way to get SAU and skills?
Then use it! It is your window of opportunity and it won't last long.

2.  Always use the item with the highest SR.

Following these 2 rules is the fastest way possible.

Advanced Skilling Theory

Skills affecting SR and Effectiveness are not exactly the same.

This becomes extremely important when you find yourself in a situation where you can't unlock all skills.
In this situation you have to prioritize which skills to unlock first (others should be chipped out a little to avoid them getting locked)
it depends mainly on your chosen profession: hunter, miner or crafter.

Following chart, made by Mou Moose, shows what skills are gained using different items:

The "common" or "overlapping" skills allow you to advance in Rifles using a Melee weapon, for example.
However, raising the SR on the Rifle using a Sword will obviously raise your Effectiveness with Rifles significantly less than your Effectiveness with Swords.

The skills that do raise your effectiveness are called "effectiveness-skills"

We cannot be 100% certain that all skills that can be obtained only by using this certain item are also raising it's effectiveness level.
Also, we can't be 100% certain that there is no skill that can be obtained with both melee weapons and rifles, that could raise effectiveness on both,

We can't be sure, but it's highly likely, and it's the best theory we got, so far...
All the lists below are based on that assumption.

Rifle effectiveness-skills are:
  • Aim
  • Ballistics
  • Fire Arms
  • Fire Burst
  • Inflicted Damage
  • Mechanics
  • Rifle
Melee effectiveness-skills are:
  • Blades
  • Close Combat
  • Fencing
  • Melee
  • Weapon Aim
Rifle/Melee overlapping skills are:
  • Accurate Eye
  • Determination
  • Intrepidity
  • Weapon Grip
  • Weaponry
Rifle/Melee overlapping skills that are also gained/used when healing or avoiding damage:
  • Anatomy
  • Coordination
  • Fauna
Rifle/Melee overlapping skills that are also gained/used when healing, avoiding damage or scanning:
  • Attention
  • Concentration
  • Focus
  • General Tools
  • Knowledge
  • Response
  • Science

Your final goal is to get maximum amount of effectiveness skills.

It is not important how exactly you will achieve this, as long as there is next higher level item you can skill on.
You will never lose any skill, even if you skill "wrong".
Your effectiveness levels can only stay the same or go up, they can never drop.

No other skills you gain, in any amounts, can affect it in any way.
You can be at stage 0 in avoidances, HK and melee
You can be at stage 30 in avoidances, HK and melee
Your effectiveness with rifles is still exactly the same

Only difference will be the final amount of the effectiveness-skills, once you reach the last item on the skilling ladder:

Skilling through the SR gaps

In the weapons ladder there are big "SR gaps" between some weapons/tools, where decreasing SR on the lower item and increasing SR on the next higher item will meet very low (60%-70%, and even as low as 30% in some cases).

In AfterWorld the direct route is not always the fastest way to reach your destination.. ;)

This holds true for skilling too, to gain high rifle levels at times you have to skill melee.
Most skills gained while skilling melee are not rising your true effectiveness on rifles (ability to deal damage on target and bypass it's avoidances), but they will rise your SR on rifles and help you over the low SR areas.

Once you have reached decent SR on the next rifle (above SR 75%)  you can start skilling rifle again. When SR on the rifle will start dropping you can temporarily chip out some skills (advisably overlapping melee skills) to get the SR on rifle down again.
You can repeat this process several times, if needed (depends on how deep is the SR gap), replacing the substitution skills with the skills that provide real effectiveness on rifles (skills like Inflicted Damage, Aim, etc)

Once you have gathered good amount of chipped out SNI's in your inventory you are ready for the "jump" - you will reinsert all the SNIs and start using the next, higher level rifle (melee weapon, scanner..)

This system is usable not only for rifle skilling as in our example, but also for melee skilling, HK skilling and mining scanner skilling - only the "substitute skills" are gained from different activities there (for mining mainly from refining, but also from melee/rifle skilling).

so, now we can rephrase the main rule #2 of skilling:

always stay on the high SR
